Location Profile - Great Central Railway (N) - Ruddington
Thanks to Ben Williams for the details about this location
I believe this is an old army location that is a branch off the old Great Central line. Ruddington is now the end of the branch up from Loughborough - EWS freight trains use the branch as far as East Leake gypsum works and the line is now complete up to Ruddington via a headshunt reverse. The site is owned by GCR and is used for storage and restoration of stock.
Directions (view map)
Take the A60 south out of Nottingham. At the roundabout (see map) take a right into the business park (the road is also signposted to the Railway Centre). You can park in the Country Park car park and enter the main site or walk through the park and continue up to the footbridge over the railway for a good view of the whole site.
Usual machines
There is a resident steam crane here, and a diesel Taylor crane. There is also a refurbished personnel carrier. Recently many new or recently overhauled Jarvis machines have been tested here, as has one of the new RM95 ballast cleaners, the Speno rail grinder and various road railers.
