On-Track Plant - Location Profiles - Slateford OTPD

Location Profile - Slateford OTPD

Thanks to Ben Williams for the details about this location

Jarvis depot for the Edinburgh area of Scotland.

Directions

The machines in the yard and depot can be viewed from passing trains (if you're quick!) on the Edinburgh - Carstairs line between Edinburgh Haymarket and Slateford stations (on the east side of the line.) From Slateford station (southbound platform side) take the road left parallel to the line and follow it down to some derelict buildings and a playing field on the right. There is a footbridge here over the Edinburgh avoiding lines (taking a footpath to the depot) and the depot and yard can be viewed with binoculars although getting IDs from here is difficult. The depot can be viewed better from the playing field. Wouldn't recommend visiting this area alone by the way!

Usual machines

There are three resident OOU tampers here. Jarvis machines visit for light maintenance.

The three OOU tampers mentioned have since been scrapped.

Also, some changes. (Thanks to Scott Aitken for this update)...

I have had some people ask me when I've been in Slateford station why they can`t get access into the yard now, This may be because of security because of the First Scotrail stabling point being here for about 12-18 months and is mentioned below, It may save some people a wasted journey it may not as you may if your lucky get a look around but as with any railway depot you can only ask and get told yes or no.

Some changes have happened here lately, Access from the Harrison park end is now controlled by a sliding security gate and the Slateford relay room end at the station is now gated and is usually padlocked.

The ramshackle fence along the playing field is now an all new metal one and building work is also in full efect here so there is no access now to the derelict buildings.

Viewing of the OTP site is now sometimes impossible this being because most of the yard next to the main line was lifted and relaid to build a temporary stabling point for First Scotrail units while track renewal at Waverley station goes ahead this is to take about a year, So possibility of units blocking your view of the OTP depot as you pass by, Units here vary from day to day and certain times of the day.
