Can anyone explain what use these machines were?
I only ever saw them used once and that was not very impressive.
The best I could say for them, is that they can unclip but need at least 2 runs 1 each way. A good gang could do just about as well with hammers. (Pre ban on hammering clips)

8 November 2009 - Sledgebloke
Two runs required due to design of Pandrol clip fitting, inside and outside clips face in opposite directions. Hammer frame was required to be adjusted for height, setting correct clearance between hammers and clip base for the local track conditions. Also needed were the correct anvils in the pushing tool heads for the type of clip being fitted, clips being placed loose in the base by hand in front of the machine first. As can be seen the machine performance could depend on operator skill and/or level of "giving a toss".
