I believe this was an ingenious attempt to convert a Diesel Driven unit to Electric, even before the onslaught of Global Warming. It was intended that the Pantograph be connected to the Alternator of the Engine so that it would drive the machine and hydraulic pumps when working in tunnels to prevent a choking hazzard or in case of an Engine failiure. However this never came to fruition as these machines are not guaranteed to provide a track circuit.

Interestingly it was fitted with a glass roof to veiw the pantographs alignment while traveling, this now serves as a sunroof.

DR73431 was experimentally equipped with a pantograph around 1993 to measure the height and stagger of the overhead wires. The purpose of this was to ensure that the wires would be in the right position in relation to the track following maintenance work. The pantograph was only used a handful of times I believe.

the model is probably a liliput model now produced by bachmann as a dummy or powered machine, it is also an early design with 2 piece roof not the full length roof that you usually see, sadly to HO gauge. Hope this helps

Re: Model tampers: Bachmann do the 1970s BR version as described above, but I have their US version which is un-marked, has a larger and better motor, no buffers, but fitted with working buckeye couplers.
