Because this machine has 'ALC' an operator will need to be in the lead (tower) cab through out the lenght of the site. Also because the engine is right behind the tower cab it is very noisy with either windows or doors open. It's a shame Balfours did not think of the when they selected the spec for the Compacts.

The comments of a man who never had to spend an entire renewals shift in an operating cab. These machines get very hot when working and the operating cabs could do a very good job posing as a greenhouse !!.

wouldnt it have been possible to have vents/grills fitted to let out the heat when these vehicles were originally speced and built or is air con the best option

Air con is the best bet, as without it filtering the air, you'd find that with vents the cab's would fill with dust very quickly. Also there is alot of electrical equipment inside the tamping cab that generates alot of heat, this heat would not dissipate with vents alone.
