An interesting vehicle, Bob tells me:
"Apparently a "Rail mounted Auger".
TOPS code YXO-A
Design code YX302A
Condemned & broken up at Reading in 1984
Builder is given as a contractor for the WR in 1956.
The number range puts in the middle of a batch of H7 container flats built at Swindon in 1937, although how much of the original wagon was used is unclear."

I wonder wether if it was one of the augers used to bore OLE mast foundations for early electrification.

The machine was produced for the Western Region, so OLE would have not been of interest to them. But the ST&TE would have required it for the boring of holes for signal posts.
I have checked my original notes and note the company "Auto Mower, Bath". The match truck is KDB 451283. The machine is numbered Earth Auger No. S68.
What may be the same machine, are instructions on page 134 of the WR Regional Appendix dated October 1960.These refer to the Lennox Lomax Earth Auger Equipment. This item had self-propulsion at 10 mph and hydraulic, transmission and hand screw wheel brakes plus a hand braked match truck.

Looking at the picture both auger and match wagon have lever brakes so might not be as quoted above..Just above the steel sections on the floor for the auger and the match wagon is easy to spot as it is painted
