Appologies for sounding ignorant but what are the main duties of the above vehicle?

It's used for lineside vegetation control, It appears to be fitted with a chipper at the back where cut down tree trunks & branches are fed into the horizontal funnel at the back, shredded & blown out on to the lineside.

Theres a similar one at Great Central but suspect they use it. It was formerly owned by Amey. I think this one is long scrapped though.

In answer to Kev. Jones Plant Services are putting the contents of their Rail division up for auction on Saturday 7th July through the auctioneers Malcolm Harrison (www.malcolmharrison.com). Venue is Garretts Green in Brum. One of the lots is their Bruff/Ford tractor A 686 PYD. Unfortunately minus it's rail wheels, according to it's last observer, but hopefully they hav'nt been thrown away.

I used to do the training of the operators for these machines from around 1990 onwards the machines were based at Nottingham and Manchester (Newton Heath) on the northern section of the LMR. Originaly they were fitted with Flails and then later on the Manchester based machine was fitted with a Tee Cee 960 wood chipper capable of chipping trees up to 10 inch diameter. To ontrack this vehicle the vehicle was driven onto the track and then the lift and slew mechanism was utilised to on/off track.
