DR 73946
21st November 2008

Recent news articles seem to be about machines getting scrapped and exported. It's been quite a while since a new machine arrived in the country! That changed at the start of November.
DR 73946 is a Plasser & Theurer Euromat 08-4x4/4S tamper owned by VolkerRail. It was built in 2007 and is the first S&C tamper designed to work on any standard gauge track in Europe - including the UK's restrictive W6a loading gauge.
It moved to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway for testing a few days after arrival in the UK.
A slightly strange photo of it at the NYMR can be found here.

This machine was in the workshop at West Ealing on the 13/14 October 08, but was not carrying any ID number at that time.

It is now in use on the west coast operated by Grantrail who are owned by VolkerRail. By all accounts this machine will be staying here under Grant's control for a long time.

I think 73946 was at Tebay on Friday 28/11/2008. I got a flleeting glimpse of it from a passing Pendolino at speed.
