    Do all the underground certified machines have to have the 3 stage arms

    No. 3 piece booms (as opposed to monobloc booms) can be specified on certain types of excavator. I believe the benefit is that it gives the machine extra versitility in that it can dig virtually up to the railway wheels.

    I don't think they have to I think its just tick the option box.

    As the boom can get closer to the machine it means the machine can change its lifting capacity whereas the monobloc booms can't it is also know as a articulated boom.

    the 3 piece boom straightens out more which makes working under ole easier
